Carthago Nova (Kartagenea, New Carthage, Cartagena)

Hasdrubal the Fair expanded the ancient city of Mastia into a new carthaginian centre named Kart-Hadasht. He realised the strategic importance of the city and build a strong wall and fortifications beginning in 223 BC, making the city virtually impregnable.

Punic Wall, New Carthage
A part of this wall can be seen in one of the the gardens of Hogar Escuela de la Milagrosa, one of the few remaining Punic traces before Roman domination. This section of wall is where the isthmus used to be - the only land access to the city between the mountains of San Jos and Despeaperros, a naturally strong defensive position.
